Chinese Zodiac History

The twelve zodiac signs in Chinese astrology come from an ancient myth. According to legend, animals from around the world gathered for a race called by the Jade Emperor. The order in which the animals finished the race would determine their place in the Chinese lunar calendar. The Rat, who was wise and strategic, finished first while the Pig, who was easily distracted, came in last.

The Chinese zodiac is calculated by the Chinese lunar calendar and is based on a twelve-year cycle, with each year associated with an animal sign. These signs are the rat, dragon, monkey, ox, snake, rooster, tiger, horse, dog, rabbit, goat, and pig. Each animal is associated with different personality traits:

  • Rat: wise
  • Dragon: strong
  • Monkey: flexible
  • Ox: industrious
  • Snake: adaptable
  • Rooster: consistent
  • Tiger: brave
  • Horse: impulsive
  • Dog: loyal
  • Rabbit: cautious
  • Goat: peaceful
  • Pig: friendly

Use the chart below to find the animal associated with your birth year. Just remember: the Chinese New Year falls somewhere between January 21 and February 20 each year, so if you were born in January or February, find out if your birthday was before or after Chinese New Year to know which year you belong to in the Chinese lunar calendar.
